How to put on a nipple shield

Using a nipple shield can be helpful for breastfeeding.

If you are considering using a shield I suggest you read my full post on nipple shields to help you in your decision making. If you have already decided to use a shield then here’s my step-by-step guide on how to put on a nipple shield. You can also watch my video on nipple shields.

Choose the right size

Ensure you have the correct nipple shield size that fits your nipple and areola comfortably.

Cleaning

Wash and sterilise your nipple shield before first use. Thereafter wash it with hot soapy water and wash your hands prior to applying your nipple shield.

Warm the shield

You may find rinsing the shield in warm water makes it easier to apply. Ensure that the water is not too hot to cause damage to the shield or a burn to you or your baby.

This is not an essential step.

positioning the shield

Hold the shield with the concave side facing your breast.

Turning the shield slightly inside out so as to shorten the teat can help to draw your nipple and breast tissue into the teat.

Ensure the opening is aligned with your nipple and place the shield against your nipple and areola. Try not to lift your breast when applying the shield as this can affect the fit.

The shield should sit comfortably on your breast with your nipple drawn into the shield. Your nipple should be elongated.

You can use a little expressed breast milk or clean water around the edge of the nipple shield to improve the adherence to your skin. Additionally you can store your shield in clean water between uses to help adherence.

Some shields are not completely circular and have cut outs for your baby’s chin and / or nose. If you are using such a shield then consideration of the position you plan to feed your baby in should be used when choosing the angle of the shield.

Breastfeeding position

Position your baby as you normally would for breastfeeding. Bring your baby to your breast rather than bringing your breast to the baby. Guide your baby to the nipple shield, making sure they take in the shield and a good portion of the areola into their mouth.

Try to discourage your baby from sucking in the shield by sliding their lips down the shield teat. You want to encourage your baby to latch just as you would without a shield in place. Watch for signs that your baby is latching well and sucking effectively.

When your baby has finished feeding it should be possible to see a small pool of your milk in the end of the nipple shield.

remove and Clean

After feeding, gently remove the nipple shield, being careful not to pull on your nipple. Clean the shield according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Observe your baby

Observe your baby for signs of good volumes of milk intake, signs of satiety, normal wet and dirty nappies for their age, appropriate weight gain, normal energy levels.

It is often worthwhile consulting with a breastfeeding specialist for personalised guidance and support whilst deciding to use or using a nipple shield. Please do get in touch if you need support.
